The Importance of Pet Portraits

Like many, I’m an animal lover. Since 2016, I’ve had the ability to see the unique personalities, emotions, and expressions of both pets and rescued farm animals from behind my camera.

As a dog photographer, I have experience in both solo portraits—where your dog is the star of the session—and family portraits, that include you and your family in the portrait sessions with your dog. My client, Maureen, has said:

I always wanted professional photographs of myself with my dog, Ralphie… Not everyone can photograph animals—along with their nervous mommy-owner, but Chris made us both feel very relaxed and comfortable. He really took the time to capture a wide variety of poses. These are photos of me with my best friend that I will forever cherish.”

Not only do I have experience with dogs, but I’m a cat photographer as well. My wife and I have two cats, Lady and Frank, who have graciously modeled for me in the past. In capturing portraits of cats, I have extensive experience in keeping their focus, waiting for the perfect expression, and patiently watching for playful interactions.

Types of Pet Portraits

Solitary: Solitary pet portraits are great for focusing on one animal in particular. Maybe it’s their birthday, maybe it’s the anniversary of their adoption, or maybe you just want some professional photos of your four-pawed pal. Whatever the occasion or reason, I’m happy to focus my attention and camera on just one animal to capture the perfect portrait you’ll be able to show all your friends.

Group: Do you have more than one pet? Are your cat and dog best friends? When you have more than one furry or feathered friend to love, no one should be left out of a portrait. From rats and hamsters to ducks and dogs, I’m capable of handling multiple animals in a photo in a session. Read on to discover more of my experiences working with multiple animals.

Candid: Pets do the darndest things. In my experience, animals’ unpredictability can lead to some amazing photographs you can cherish for years to come. As I’ve spent a fair amount of time photographing roaming farm animals, I’m more than comfortable with dogs and cats interacting in their natural habitat. Throughout the session, I’ll capturing candid photos of your pet doing what they do best: being adorable.

Posed: Does your pet have a favorite toy or spot in the house? Posed photos can be tricky but provide great reminders of what makes your pet so special. Before our photo session, tell me a little more about your pet and what you’re hoping to see from the set of photos we capture.

Rescue Animal Photography

Pets aren’t the only animals I’ve photographed. I have several years of experience photographing farm animals like cows, goats, pigs, roosters and donkeys. While different from their domesticated counterparts, the farm animals I’ve worked with at animal sanctuaries have just as much personality—if not more—than the cats and dogs I’ve photographed before.

The majority of the animal photography I’ve captured revolves around rescue animals. I’m lucky to work with amazing sanctuaries like Here With Us Farm Sanctuary, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, and Whispering Rise Farm & Animal Sanctuary. One of my favorite parts of photographing animals is working with their different personalities. From rambunctious goats to timid calves and affectionate pigs, my experience has taught me the best way to get “that shot” of any animal is to have patience and respect. Throughout all my shoots, after spending some time in their space and giving food or belly rubs, every animal’s personality started to shine through.

As an animal photographer, I find joy in meeting all sorts of rescued animal friends. My experience has allowed me to interact with a range of animals, both domesticated and wild, and you can be sure I’ll take the utmost care when photographing any animal of which you’d like a portrait. I’m always on the lookout for exciting new sanctuaries and havens with rescued animals to photograph.

My Experience

As a lover of animals, I’ve found several ways throughout my life to fuse my passion of photography with my passion for animals. From pets to farm animals, I’m grateful for the ability to see humans’ best friends through my lens and call myself a pet photographer in Lancaster, PA.

I had the pleasure of photographing rescued farm animals at Here With Us Farm Sanctuary in 2018. From cows to goats to roosters, I met colorful characters with rough pasts and bright futures. Among the variety of animals I got to meet was Reggie, a male calf. After just a short time in the pasture with him, Reggie approached me and my camera, allowing for some breathtaking up-close shots of his gorgeous eyes and beautiful white and brown coloring. During my shoot, it was easy for me to capture the mission of Here With Us Farm Sanctuary—to show others that farm animals are individuals with personalities and feelings—in each portrait of their affectionate, curious animals.

I’ve also had the privilege of photographing several pets and their families since 2016. Among them is a rescued greyhound named Riddle and his humans, Roxanne and Anthony. The pet portrait session was a surprise birthday gift from Anthony to Roxanne, and eight-year-old Riddle’s sweet disposition made the shoot all the more fun.

I am a proud member of The Art of Compassion Project—an international artist collective. The Art of Compassion (AOC) Project aims to raise funds through various art projects and donates 100% of the profits to vegan non-profit organizations, while opening the minds and hearts of people to animals and the global benefits of veganism.

Through the AOC Project, I have exhibited my rescue animal photography at many national and international festivals and exhibits, including Lancaster, PA; Asheville, NC; Brighton; Exeter; London, England; and Dublin, Ireland.
