Nick, Dance Instructor

Nick, Dance Instructor
Greenfield Park, Lancaster, PA

For Nick, dance is much more than movement set to music. It is exercise, community, creativity, and a lifelong process of learning. It is the challenge of mastering a skill while still leaving room to experiment and find ways to make it his own.

Nick’s connection to dance began long before he ever stepped into a dance class. As a child, he watched family members dance salsa at weddings and reunions, while his grandmother introduced him to polka through the crackling sound of AM radio. Those early experiences planted a connection between music, movement, and togetherness that would eventually return to his life in a much bigger way.

As a teenager, Nick found another unconventional path into rhythm through Dance Dance Revolution. Hours spent at arcades and playing at home may not have looked like traditional dance training, but the experience helped develop his sense of timing and his comfort moving with music.

Then, for a long stretch, dance wasn’t really part of his life.

That changed during a solo cruise celebrating his 30th birthday. Nick attended a live Dancing with the Stars show more out of curiosity than expectation. Passengers were paired with members of the crew, creating an entertaining mix of experienced dancers and complete beginners.

But one moment caught his attention: a country two-step followed by a lift between people who had only just met. The coordination, trust, and connection involved were enough to spark a question that would change the direction of his life. How could two people meet for the first time and create something like that together?

Curiosity led Nick to dance classes, and the rest became an ongoing journey.

Today, dance has become an important part of who Nick is. As a dance instructor, he gets to share that journey with others while continuing to grow himself. Every night can bring something different, like a new partner, a new song, a new challenge, or a new way of approaching familiar steps.

That combination of structure and freedom is part of what makes dance so compelling to Nick. There are techniques to learn and rhythms to understand, but there is also room for personality, spontaneity, and discovery.

For this portrait session, I wanted to capture some of that energy and personality beyond the dance floor. Nick’s story is ultimately about movement, but it is also about curiosity: following an unexpected moment, trying something new, and discovering a passion that becomes a lasting part of your life.

As a photographer, those are the stories I love to document. I love to show the people behind what they do, and the experiences that helped shape who they are.
